Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is one of the richest bird habitats in peninsular India, comparable only with the Eastern Himalayas. A trip through this sanctuary would certainly be a bonanza for any birder, with over 300 species found in a relatively small area of 25 sq kms. Some of the rarely seen species at Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary are Mottled Wood Owl, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Indian Pitta, Sri Lanka bay Owl, White - bellied woodpecker, Malabar Trogon, Black Baza etc.

The Amritara Riverside Luxury Tents is located on the banks of the River Periyar. On the opposite bank of the river are some of the finest lowland forests of Kerala. A kayaking trip amidst these great swathes of forests is an ideal sport for those inclined to be adventurous and explore the bio-diversity within these forests. You can also kayak to some of the villages upstream to get a first-hand glimpse of life in a typical spice growing and the agrarian village of Kerala.

You will commence paddling from Neriamangalam at the foothills of the Western Ghats where the River Periyar finally meanders on to the plains. Kayaking will be a fascinating experience with dense tropical jungles on one side and spice plantations on the other side of the River. You can go on a full day expedition or wander around at leisure through the friendly countryside! A visit to the hanging bridge near the Camp would be a wonderful experience for the travellers.

The quiet and beautiful countryside is ideal for walkers to discover Kerala through its off-the-beaten- track trails and the interior villages. The lush countryside and the friendly villagers are bound to make your walk rewarding. On the walks you can walk into a rubber estate, a spice plantation and numerous farms where our guide will be happy to explain the intricacies of farm life.

Sometimes a small get away to the tranquil villages nearby is just what you need to shake off your blues and reconnect with nature and that is why after our pleasant stay at Amritara Riverside Luxury Tents, we are readying ourselves for a venturesome jeep safari through the tribal villages close to us. Teeming with all kinds of animals, elephants and more, this is an excellent drive to let yourself go and be one with nature. The earthy smells are sure to get you on an all time natural high. Tagging along is an experienced naturalist who will give us a better idea of the places and wildlife that awaits us. With a sumptuous lunch at our side we reach our first village a short while later at Kalleli Medu. But our journey has just started. Nestled in a heavily forested area, Kalleli Medu, like other tribal villages is home to plentiful plants and animals. And here we are familiarizing ourselves with the myths and legends of a settlement so close but still so distant to us. The beauty in the silent symphony of forests and rivers is hardly ever paralleled. Soon, we find ourselves on top of Koduperikuthu waterfalls. This sparkling cascade is a popular picnic spot and excursion destination round the year. And what is better than a luscious lunch near the waterfalls? After filling ourselves up we walk down and our jeep picks us up at the bottom and we are off to our next stop; the tribal settlement of Kunjipara Kudi. Kunjipara Kudi is the perfect spot to understand the cultural practices of the tribal settlements because our understanding of them is far from adequate. After indulging in the breathtaking views and visiting all the important local sites we leave for the second traditional tribal settlement- the Kandampara settlement.
