experience history and luxury: hotels near bharatpur bird sanctuary to stay

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is as close to paradise as one can get without actually dying. The serene atmosphere, natural beauty and abundance of wildlife here hark back to how the world must have been before we got too greedy. But thankfully, due to an ancient archaic law, there are still patches of paradise on god’s green earth that are preserved for us to see.

One of these last remaining patches is Bharatpur, a charming little town in Rajasthan with a fascinating history and deep roots in the past. With the added advantage of being an international hot spot and breeding ground for rare birds, this destination is simply not to be missed.

When to go to Bharatpur

If you want to see nature in full bloom, perhaps late spring is the best time to go. Sometime in March, the chill begins to thaw and life reemerges from the thrush. Although already a little too warm, this is the best time to see the forest come alive in all its glory.

If high temperatures are not your thing, winter in Bharatpur has its charm. Here the cycle of seasons takes an abrupt and noticeable turn. Nature does funny things and the annual bedtime rituals for some of our fellow life forms are indeed a pleasure to watch and an oddity to learn from.

The winter has the added advantage of hosting a very special guest. These are beautiful but strong migratory creatures from Siberia who move to India for the winter, like Russian surfers sometimes spotted in Morjim, Goa. They are important to birdwatchers and many flocks to the region to simply get a glimpse of these rare Siberian Cranes.

To many, it doesn’t matter when they go. The great thing about nature is that it is never closed or shut down for renovations and whenever you decide to come to this historic Bird Sanctuary, your travels will be richly rewarded.

What to do in Bharatpur when you’re not birding.

Bharatpur is a place for Birders or Birdwatchers. Every year, large groups of birders descend on this desert paradise with books, lists and odd clothing to peer into binoculars, speak into recording devices or change lenses on their cameras. They have all but taken over the place while archaeologists and historians have been pushed aside.

To a large extent, this is understandable. There are millions of varieties of birds on our planet and most of us never get to see them, let alone study them in detail or learn their habits. This is our loss and unfortunately, time is running out. More and more animal and bird species are becoming rarer and rarer.

But if you are not into birding or have done that part already, there are whole other dimensions to Bharatpur that are worth exploring. The town has several important forts, monuments and museums while the local customs, culture and cuisine are worth examining.

As forts go, the Lohagarh Fort in Bharatpur is a big one. It is one of the best places to visit in Bharatpur and has several important monuments inside it. The fort boasts a long history of impressive victories and impassioned defence. In 1764, this obscure fort and its Jat ruler defeated the Mughal Armies at the Battle of Delhi and forced the Mughals to pay war reparations.

Then in 1805, the Lohagarh Fort successfully defended itself from a massive British Siege by Lord Lake called the Siege of Bharatpur. Over 6 weeks, the British used every weapon and technique available but could not capture the fort. Today, the fort is an impressive repository of artefacts and heirlooms.

Besides the fort, there is also an impressive Laxman Mandir here. In Indian mythology, Bharatpur is said to be the place where Lord Ram’s brother Bharat was given a kingdom. Legend has it that Laxman also visited here and lived here for a while. This is backed up by archaeological evidence of many seals and coins with Laxman’s name dating back to the 5th century BC.

Another monument worth checking out is Deeg Place. This is an interesting and lavish palace built with several water bodies and fountains surrounding it to cool guests during the hot summers. The architecture is stunningly beautiful and technically very advanced, making it a must-visit destination.
