mussoorie resort booking

Mussoorie is one of the best hill stations in India. It was the first hill station to gain widespread popularity and become an established resort town for tourists early on. Today, it is known as the “queen of the hills” and there is a renewed interest in this idyllic spot in the foothills of the Himalayas and is a hotspot for adventure sports and nature lovers.

History

Mussoorie has an illustrious history that stretches back to 1803. It was in this year that the Gorkhas under the leadership of Umer Singh Thapa conquered this region and established Mussoorie. Shortly after that, the British conquered Mussoorie and in 1819, they incorporated it into the district of Sahranpur.

In 1825, a British officer named Frederick Young established a hunting lodge here and the rest is history. The small cabin on Camel’s Back Road mushroomed into a row of houses that formed that seed that blossomed into Mussoorie. This is why Young and another officer called Mr. Shore are acknowledged as the founders of Mussoorie.

In 1832, the first beer brewery was established in Mussoorie by a gentleman named Sir Henry Bohle. The brewery had a difficult time in the early years until it taken over by Sir John Machinnon and named Mackinnon and Co. in 1850. Since then, the brewery had been one of the most notable landmarks here and is still a popular tourist destination that is fondly called the “old brewery.”

In 1900, the railway came to Dehradun. This was a big boost for Mussoorie as tourists, officials and supplies could now be easily transported to the once remote location. This started the trend of “summering” in Mussoorie that became popular with British officers stationed in India and still continues to this day.

In 1947, India became independent and the care of Mussoorie was taken over by the Indian government. Indian leaders like Nehru and Indira Gandhi visited this hill town periodically and it continues to grow as a destination for elite and the general population alike. Although its popularity grew amongst the population, development work was slow but steady.

In 1959, there was a war in Tibet and the Dalai Llama fled to India. Unbeknownst to many, his first destination in India was Mussoorie. It was around this time that the first Tibetan School and Temple were established here. Many of his followers settled in Happy Valley at the time and around 5000 Tibetans still live there. Although the Dalai Lama shifted his residence to Dharamshala in 1960, he left his imprint in Mussoorie, which still has a distinctly Tibetan and Buddhist vibe.

Visiting Mussoorie

Despite a recent uptake in tourist activity, Mussoorie remains one of the best and most dependable places to go for a weekend getaway, vacation, wellness retreat, summer retreat, or honeymoon and corporate events. Its close proximity to the Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun and an abundance of tourist activities and facilities make it a great option.

In Mussoorie, visitors can check out places of natural beauty like waterfalls, dine at some truly divine restaurants, shop on Mall Road, visit nearby orchards, go on treks, play adventure sports, and visit historical monuments dating back to colonial times. However, most people come here simply to enjoy the fresh mountain air, cool climes, and breathtaking views of the mountains.
