Coorg is a nature lover’s paradise. It is a well-known hill station in Karnataka that is famous for producing great coffee and for its natural beauty.  There are a number of attractions in Coorg that can all be covered in one short trip. To help you plan your trip and get the most out of your visit, we have devised a short itinerary for Coorg:

 

Day 1

 

Arrival – Coorg is easily accessible by air, train and road. The closest airport to Coorg is Mysore Airport, which is about 120 Kms away. The closest international airport is Mangalore, which is about 140 Kms away.

 

Coorg can also be accessed by train via the Mysore Railway Station, which is about 100 Kms from Coorg. There are a number of private and public busses that ferry tourists from these airports and the railway station. Most Hotels and Resorts in Coorg will also arrange a shuttle service or help in reaching Coorg.

 

It is best to arrive at Coorg in the first half of the day. This will give you a good view of the misty ambience and pretty environment of the city. Regardless of if you are travelling by train or airplane, the last leg of your journey will be by road.

 

This is an interesting journey with stunning landscapes, beautiful views and one of a kind weather. If you travel this path in daylight, you will see interesting sights along the way that will orient you to local conditions and welcome you.

 

Stay - There are a number of good hotels in Coorg. Chief amongst them is the Amritara Ambatty Greens in Virajpet, Coorg. This hotel has all the amenities and facilities that any tourist could ask for. The hotel boasts of an 18 hole golf course, swimming pool and a variety of room types to choose from.

 

Lunch – There are a number of great restaurants in Coorg offering all types of cuisines. If you are too tired to head out immediately after checking in, you can visit the restaurant at the resort.

 

The Amritara Hotel has a wonderful restaurant on the property called Arabasta, which serves Indian and continental food. Guests have the options of ordering from the a la carte menu or going in for a buffet lunch. If you are too tired to go to the restaurant, you can order from the resort’s extensive in-room dining menu.

 

Evening - After checking in, guests usually rest for a while before embarking on their first excursion. You can take the rest of the day exploring the resort or playing a round of golf at the beautiful golf course attached to the hotel. In the evening, you can go for a refreshing swim.

 

Dinner – Unless you are too tired, you can elect to venture out at night. You can visit one of the many famous restaurants in Coorg or take a drive or walk about to get a feel for the city. Some of the famous places to eat in Coorg include: The Spice Rack, Green Cardamom by Club Mahindra, Raintree, Coorg Cuisine, Fort Mercara and more.

 

Nightlife – Surprisingly, Coorg has a bustling nightlife. There are many bars, cafes and clubs in this little town where tourists and locals can gather for a drink in the evenings to unwind from a long day of travelling and sightseeing.

 

The Hive Bar at Taj Madikeri, the Planters Club, the Lost Horizon and The Deck are all excellent choices to quench your thirst and socialize before hitting the sack.

 

Day 2

 

Breakfast – On your second day, it’s time to visit some of the many amazing attractions in Coorg. It’s best to begin your day early and start with a good breakfast because there will be a lot of walking and travelling. The Amritara Resort has an amazing Buffet Breakfast spread that may be included in your package.

 

After a full breakfast, you can elect to visit one or two of the many tourist attractions in Coorg before lunch. These include: Coffee Plantations, Madikeri Fort, Omkareshwar Temple, Raja’s Seat, Abbey Falls, Tadiandamol Peak, Barapole River, Dubare Elephant Camp, Nishani Motte, Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Kumara Parvatha Hill and many more.

 

Coffee Plantation - In Coorg itinerary for 3 days list, one of the main attractions of Coorg for second day, which is guaranteed to add a jolt to your trip, is a visit to a Coffee Plantation. As you may know, Coorg is famous for its coffee and has a landscape and tradition of making and exporting some of the best coffee in the world.

 

If you are a coffee lover and want to know more about how coffee is grown, prepared, processed and packed, a visit to one of the Coffee plantations in Coorg will be a great experience. Here, you will learn about the different varieties of the plant and the intricacies of running a plantation.

 

Although there are many sprawling plantations in Coorg, the Mercara Gold Estate is one of the best. It does most of the processing and roasting of the coffee beans on the estate itself and has a well-organized tour that explains the process.

 

Lunch – If you are starting your tour of Coorg with a Coffee Plantation, you can elect to have your lunch there. Many plantations organize a special lunch for visitors while others have full blown cafes and restaurants on the estate.

 

The Dubare Elephant Camp is an awesome place to visit for animal lovers. The camp has over 150 elephants and is highly rated by tourists. Visitors can feed, bathe, pet and groom the elephants. These magnificent beasts are surprisingly gentle animals and there is nothing to be afraid of.

 

Madikiri Fort was made in the 17th century and has church and palace inside it. Also called Mercara Fort, it was renovated by Tipu Sultan and then by the British. It is open to tourists from 10 am to 5:30 pm and is surely worth a visit, especially by those who enjoy historical architecture and cultural places.

 

Omkareshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is close to Madikiri Fort. The architecture of the temple is very interesting because one sees influences of Islamic, Gothic, Hindu and local architecture. Interestingly, the temple is located on an island that is shaped like an “OM.”

 

Water Sports are also very popular in Coorg. If you are interested in adventure, you can do River Rafting, Rappelling, Kayaking and Boating on the Barapole River. At Chelavara, you have the option of Quad Biking and going on a Microlight Flight. There is also the option for going on Wildlife Safari to check out the local flora and fauna.

 

Dinner – After a long day of sightseeing, it is best to have a relaxing dinner. Pick from one of the many amazing dinner destinations that adorn Coorg. If you are hankering for some authentic North Indian food like Dal Makhni and Naan, the Barbeque Bay by Club Mahindra might be a good option.

 

Day 3

 

On your last day in Coorg, you can decide to take it easy or pay a quick visit to the places that you have not yet covered. If you like nature and waterfalls, you can go on a tour of the many rivers, streams and waterfalls in Coorg. Chief amongst them are: Abbi Falls, Iruppu Falls, Chelavara Falls and Onti Falls. At Iruppu Falls, one can also bathe under the waterfall.

 

Check out – Most hotels require you to check out at 11 am or 12 noon unless you inform them beforehand that you would like a late checkout. If your flight or train out of Coorg is in the evening or late at night, you can check out, leave your luggage at the resort and go on one last sightseeing excursion.

 

Breakfast – On the day of your check out, it is again important to eat a full but light breakfast as you will be travelling. If your package does not include breakfast, it is best to walk around and visit some of the many street-side restaurants that specialize in local dishes.

 

Shopping – Most travellers like to buy at least one souvenir to remember their trip. Some need to buy gifts for loved ones back at home while others need to pick up some special items that they me be planning to buy.

 

It is best to leave shopping for the last day of your trip. This ensures that you do not have to lug your purchases wherever you go and you get a good idea of the varieties available and the prices that are prevalent in the market.

 

Some of the markets in Coorg that are worth visiting are: Tibetan Flea Market, Kushal Nagar Market, Virajpet Market and Street Market. Some of the things you may want to buy are local spices, locally made coffee, silk sarees and Tibetan handicrafts.

 

Leaving Coorg is just as easy as arriving here. Since it is a popular tourist designation, there are ample taxis and busses readily available to transport you to your hotel, airport, train station or bus stop. If you are leaving in your own vehicle, be sure to get accurate directions from the front desk.
