places to stay in varanasi

Varanasi — also known as Kashi or Banaras — is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations. Sitting along the banks of the holy Ganges River, the city is an overwhelming blend of spirituality, culture, rituals, and timeless charm. Pilgrims flock to witness sunrise prayers on the ghats, the evening Ganga aarti, and to bathe in the sacred waters. But amidst all this energy and devotion, finding the right place to stay in Varanasi is key to experiencing the city in its truest form.

Whether you're visiting for spiritual enrichment, cultural exploration, or simply to unwind in a city steeped in history, choosing accommodation near the ghats or major temples can enhance your entire Varanasi experience.

Why Your Stay in Varanasi Matters

Varanasi isn’t a city you just “see” — it’s one you feel. And the place where you stay becomes a part of that experience. Unlike typical tourist cities, Varanasi has a pulse — loud, rhythmic, sacred — and being close to that pulse is essential. Here’s why your stay makes all the difference:

• Convenience for Temple Visits: The city is home to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most important Shiva shrines in India. Accommodations within walking distance can save time and provide peace of mind, especially for early morning or late evening darshans.
• Access to the Ghats: The soul of Varanasi lies on its ghats. Whether you're watching cremation ceremonies at Manikarnika Ghat or attending spiritual discourses at Assi Ghat, proximity means you can soak in these moments effortlessly.
• Cultural Immersion: Many heritage hotels and havelis offer more than a bed — they offer stories, traditional decor, and warm hospitality steeped in local customs.

Popular Areas to Stay in Varanasi

Depending on your purpose, Varanasi offers a variety of locations to suit your needs:

1. Old City Near Ghats

Staying near the ghats is ideal for first-time visitors and spiritual travellers. The winding alleys, ringing temple bells, and view of the river provide a deeply immersive experience. From here, you can explore the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and Dashashwamedh Ghat and participate in the evening aarti.

2. Assi Ghat

This relatively quieter area is popular among students, researchers, and long-term visitors. It offers a peaceful atmosphere, yoga classes, cultural cafes, and a slower pace while still being well connected to the main ghats.

3. Cantonment Area

For those who prefer wider roads, modern amenities, and easy access to the train station or airport, the Cantonment area is home to many contemporary hotels and luxury stays.

A Heritage Stay on the Ghats – A Timeless Experience

For those seeking an authentic and peaceful ghat-side stay, Suryauday Haveli offers a unique and soulful retreat. Located on the serene Shivala Ghats, this beautifully restored heritage haveli was originally built in the early 20th century by the Royal Family of Nepal as a quiet retreat for the elderly. Today, it stands as one of the finest hotels in Varanasi near the Ghat, offering both character and comfort.

Your stay at Suryauday begins with a 15-minute boat ride upstream along the ghats — a journey that introduces you to the timeless rhythm of Banaras. Nestled directly on the river, the Haveli’s rooms offer mesmerising views of the Ganges and the spiritual life that flows through it daily. The narrow alleys behind the Haveli also connect you to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, just a 15-minute walk away.

The property strikes a perfect balance between old-world charm and modern convenience. From warm wooden interiors and antique furnishings to attentive service and traditional vegetarian meals, Suryauday Haveli offers an experience that is deeply rooted in the city’s spiritual heritage.

Tips for Choosing the Right Stay in Varanasi

1. Prioritise Location: If you want to be part of the spiritual action, choose a place close to the ghats or the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. If you’re visiting for peace and introspection, areas like Assi Ghat might be a better fit.
2. Check Accessibility: The old city has narrow lanes, so hotels close to the ghats may not be directly accessible by car. Some properties, like Suryauday Haveli, offer boat transfers which enhance the experience.
3. Expect Local Flavour: Heritage properties and old havelis may not offer high-rise luxury, but they offer something more valuable — character, history, and local immersion.
4. Book in Advance: Varanasi attracts millions of visitors during festivals like Dev Deepawali, Maha Shivratri, and Kartik Purnima. Booking your stay early ensures a better choice of rooms and rates.
