What is Thattekad Bird Sanctuary?

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is a small area of about 25 sq. km. in Kerala that has been protected by the government, as it is home to a large number of bird species, animals and plant life.

Dr. Salim Ali, a famous Indian ornithologist, was instrumental in developing this birding paradise. Dr. Ali realized early on that this place is a unique geographic oddity that is home to the largest number of rare and unusual bird species in the country.

This is because Thattekad, which means “Flat forest” provides a perfectly protected, low-lying, moist and forested sanctuary for birds. It is close to the Periyar River, which provides a steady source of drinking water while the many insects and worms found in the forest provide ample food.

Many people visit this area for bird watching or “Birding.” This is a popular pastime and a unique subculture has developed around it that attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world. Birders like to spot and observe different species of birds, as these graceful creatures are intrinsically beautiful.

Birds also display a variety of interesting behaviors and activities that are interesting to observe and learn from. Birders take photographs, make notes and wait patiently in the thickets to spot some of the rarest and most unique birds that they can find.

There are also a lot of naturalists who visit this area for the peaceful and picturesque environment that it provides. Besides birds, the rich natural forests of Kerala are home to some interesting animals as well.
